Place tablecloths and vases of flowers on the tables. Include place settings at each student’s seat and, on top of each plate, place a book. Include extra books in the center of the table. Students will each take a seat and “sample” the book in front of them.

PREP: Decorate the tables with table clothes, flowers, book bins, placemats, etc. Organize each table by genre. I gathered books from my classroom library as well as the school library. Create a fiction book tasting packet. The printables I put in my 1st graders packet are shown below.

Look for and identify books that would be of interest to your child/children as well as books that they may not normally think to pick up. Variety is key. This is a chance to support known reading preferences as well as to expand into new genres/topics. Pick out a lot! You want to provide a number of books to “taste”. Not sure where to start?

Welcomed students to the Book Tasting with Instructions! 3. Students proceeded to pick up their read name cards [like a wedding reception] and made their way to the reservation desk. PERFECT TIMING! The Book Tasting Menus that the students recorded on as well as the genre labels came from the pack! My extra placements (Dollar Tree only had 20!) also came from her packet! Here is how I set up my book tasting: I set up six different tables. Each table was for a specific genre. I placed a placement, a menu, and a plate at each seat. Then, I put one book on each plate and a few extra books in the middle of the table. I put the genre sign in the middle.
