Calculating Pi Using the Measurements of a Circle 1. Make sure you are using a perfect circle. This method won't work with ellipses, ovals, or anything but a real circle. 2. Measure the circumference of a circle as accurately as you can. The circumference is the length that goes around the... 3…

As with all formulas to calculate pi, any number is just an estimate and the calculation goes on forever -- the more you do it, the more accurate the result generally becomes. To try your hand at Leibniz, calculate just the first 3 terms, like this: 1 - (1/3) + (1/5) That's 1 - .333 + .200 = .867.

Pi is one of the most popular mathematical constants used in all areas of mathematics and physic. It is the ratio of circumference to diameter of a circle and has an approximate value of 22/7 or 3.14. You can easily write Pi with freehand as a Greek small letter Pi (π).

It's the rarest of mathematical constants, an unfailingly accurate ratio that's also neverending. The digits of Pi have been calculated out to more than 22 trillion decimal places without ever repeating (that's called an "irrational number"). The definition of pi is simple: It's the ratio of a circle's circumference divided by its diameter.
